AMD CPU Naming Explained!

If you are planning to buy a CPU and AMD is your choice, you must know about the naming scheme to better understand the processor. But don’t worry though,  I got you covered here because this post will help you to better understand CPU offerings from team red😎. Like I mentioned in the Intel CPU naming post, the numbers and letters that you see on a processor are not random, but have a specific indication about performance or power consumption. So let’s dive deep into it🦈.

So, AMD has Ryzen processors as their mainstream CPUs along with Athlon and the mighty Threadripper😍. Since Epyc is a server-level CPU, let’s just ignore it and proceed with consumer CPUs here. You got Ryzen 3,5,7 and 9 to choose from. Like the Intel CPUs, these are brand modifiers which differentiate one from another in the Ryzen lineup.
🔶Gen indicates the CPU generation. At the time of writing this post, we are currently at 3rd gen for desktops and 4th gen for notebooks processors. 4th gen desktop CPUs are expected to launch in late 2020.
🔶Performance level:
1,2,3=lower end
4,5,6=high-performance
7,8,9=enthusiast level
🔶SKU (stock keeping unit) is for distinctively recognizing an exact CPU model. Usually a higher number generally indicates more features and capabilities.
🔶Product line suffix indicates the unique features of the CPU. Here are some common letters and its meaning along with an example.
🔹Desktop CPUs:
G=has built-in Radeon Vega graphics (Ryzen 3-3200G)
X=supports XFR (Extended Frequency Range) which is the name for AMD’s automated turbo technology (Ryzen 9-3950X)
XT=refreshed 'X' models with slightly higher clock speeds (Ryzen 9-3900XT)
E=low power CPUs (Ryzen 7-2700E)
GE=low power APUs with built-in Vega graphics (Ryzen 3-3200GE)
🔹Mobile CPUs:
U=ultra-low power (Ryzen 3-3500U)
H=high-performance graphics (Ryzen 7-3750H)
HS=special high-performance graphics with lower TDP (Ryzen 9-4900HS)

Try to guess the features whenever you see an AMD processor so that you will be able to understand it's unique capabilities. OK, let's try something here.
⭕Ryzen 5-3600=It's a 3rd gen high-performance level CPU. Since there is no suffix, we know that it's a standard desktop CPU.
⭕Ryzen 7-3750H=This one is a 3rd gen mobile CPU with high-performance graphics.
I hope this explanation helped you in some ways. Learn more about Intel CPU naming schemes here. Have a good day!🤗
