Do you have an
old PC that struggles to run on windows 10? Or just trying to boost
the performance of your rig that you built recently? Then try these tips to get
a slight improvement in your system.
Most of the ‘low-end’ pc users complained that they started noticing a
performance degradation once they upgraded to windows 10. This is primarily
because the old hardware in those systems couldn’t do well with the additional
new features added with the new version. So, although you can’t just double the
performance of your existing pc with a few clicks, you can optimize Windows 10 for improved
performance than before with these 10 tips 🤗
1.Use Defragmentation Tool
This can greatly increase
the performance of your system if you are using a hard disk. All the files stored on a hard drive become
fragmented over time, meaning that parts of the files are stored in different
areas of the drive instead of right next to each other. As a result, the OS consumes
more time to locate and open the file. A defrag can fix this. Press Windows
key+S and type ‘defragmentation’ and hit enter.
Select all the drives and click
on optimize all. Please note that this will take some time depending on your
storage space. Do this regularly at least once in a week.
2.Modify Power Plan
Changing the plan to ‘power
saving’ can help your battery to last longer. But this will significantly
reduce the performance of your system. Since our goal is to get maximum
throughput, you should change it to ‘high performance’. To change it, go to
control panel>hardware&sound>power options>select high performance
3.Increase Virtual Memory
By default, Windows sets
the minimum size of the paging file equal to the amount of RAM installed on
your computer. But if you frequently run an application that
requires more virtual memory, you can increase it by the following steps. Open
control panel>system&security>system
Click on Advanced system settings>under performance settings>advanced>under virtual memory settings
once you did that, Select
the drive where you want to create the paging file.
Initial
value-same amount as your RAM installed
Maximum
value-double the amount of RAM.
4.Startup apps
Most of the apps that you installed
will start to initialize their processes right after you started the system.
This will increase the loading time even further. You can disable the apps in the task manager to avoid this. Press CTRL+SHIFT+ESC and select startup.
Give more priority to disabling those apps who’s start-up impact is high or
medium.
⚠Pls note that do
not disable essential services like audio drivers and any apps from Intel corp.
5.Update windows and drivers
If you're
running an older release, upgrading to the most recent version of Windows 10 is a good idea since sometimes it can improve performance. Take the example
of built version 1903 update, the feature update included a patch to properly
utilize the many cores available on AMD Ryzen processors. After the update,
devices running on these had a jump of up 21% on performance for single-threaded tasks. Open settings>update&security>windows
update>check for updates and install all the updates that are available.
6.Relaunch apps on startup
This will seriously help your
pc to load-up faster after a reboot or fresh start. While this feature is
turned ON, the OS will try to restore data such as cache and Memcache for many
apps from the previous session. This will take many computer resources making
your system even slower. To disable this feature, press Windows key+I and then
accounts>sign-in options>under privacy, toggle this button to OFF.
7.Disable visual effects
Like its predecessors,
Windows 10 also offers many visual effects like Window animations, shadows
under the mouse pointer, aero peek, drop shadows for icon labels on desktop,
animations in the taskbar, and shadows. Windows enables most of them by default to
give the user an excellent visual experience. But this can affect system
performance if your rig has 6 GB or less space of memory. Although disabling
all of them will give you some performance boost, I do recommend to keep some
of them to get a satisfying user feel✅.
Open control
panel>system>advanced system settings>under performance, select
settings>custom, and only give a tick to these ones. Click Apply and OK.
8. Repair system files using SFC
Corrupted system files and
registry entries can also cause system performance issues. System File A checker or SFC is a Windows utility that helps users to check for file
corruption. Open the command prompt with administrative privileges by clicking
Windows key+X and select command prompt(admin). Type the following command and
hit enter: sfc/scannow
Wait till the
verification reaches 100%.
9.Uninstall non-essential apps
Having many apps installed
in the system can cause it to run slower even though you are not opening them. As
soon as the PC is switched ON, services for the software will start to run in
the background using more computer resources. The degree of usage is directly
proportional to the number of apps that are installed in the system. So,
removing unwanted software from your PC is always a good idea. Search for add or remove programs and select the one and then hit uninstall
10. Use windows repair
Windows Repair is a tool
from tweaking.com that is designed help fix a vast majority of known Windows
problems including registry errors, file permissions, Windows Updates, Windows
Firewall and more. The repairs section has always been entirely free for
personal use which helped me to resolve many problems with my OS recently. You can
download it from here:
⏩Apart from the above
tips, scanning for viruses, disabling background apps, and restarting once in a
week can also result in improved performance.
