Apple Is Ditching Intel?

This is something that has existed as a rumor in the computing industry for years. But according to the latest reports, Apple is finally ditching Intel in favor of its upcoming ARM-based processors🧐. Yes, Apple is allegedly working on three new chips development codenamed ‘kalamata’ and it is expected to announce the same at WWDC (World Wide Developer Conference) on 22nd June 2020👏.

Furthermore, Apple is planning to release at least one MacBook and a Mac desktop with the new CPUs in 2021. The processor will be based on the upcoming iPhone 12’s A14 Bionic chip. The higher-end CPU is likely to feature 8 powerful cores codenamed ‘firestorm’ and 4 energy-efficient cores codenamed ‘icestorm’. I mean at least they got the codenames right😅. The report also suggests that it will be built on TSMC’s 5nm node. If these are true, things are looking bad for Intel since many other manufactures like Samsung, Lenovo and Microsoft is also planning to make laptops with ARM-based processors😕.

This change in approach mainly points to one thing. Apple is already working on its proprietary GPU. So the decision to dump Intel might be the first step of Apple’s desire to be an independent tech giant😎. There have been many murmuring in the Apple community ever since this report started to float around. Many developers use VMWare, Parallels, VirtualBox, or even Bootcamp in macOS to run and develop code for Windows and Linux. Now they worry that moving to ARM-based processors might eliminate this widely used feature because of the compatibility with x86 architecture☹.

The real question here is will it be faster as the 10th gen chips offered by Intel?🤔 Because if we look back at ARM-based CPUs for notebooks, they weren't as powerful as their counterparts. But there is a considerable chance that with the resources and funding from Apple, they might be able to produce some high-performance CPUs. However, this decision will make it easier for Apple to optimize their apps and updates for the whole ecosystem😇. What are your thoughts on this? Let me know in the comments and as always, have a good day!🤗
