Is Windows Defender Good Enough In 2020?

Defender is the built-in anti-malware solution for Windows 10 and was originally designed as a free downloadable program for the old Windows XP. But ever since, we started to see it as a pre-installed software from Vista to Windows 10. It was also one of the most criticized anti-malware solution over the past few years. But things have changed very much since then. Windows defender has transformed its way from a complete useless software to something that you can actually relay on. But is it any good in 2020?🤔 Let’s have a closer look at it.

Most of the user’s complaints was about the false positive rate that defender had in the past. This means it detects a file as virus or malware even if that doesn’t contain any harmful codes, breaking other software’s which uses that file. Also defender was notoriously known for deleting game files😖. But nowadays, the false positive rate has decreased in defender, thanks to the all-new intelligent detection engine. AV-Tests, an independent IT research institute ranked Windows defender in 2019 as one of the best anti-malware solution for home users along with 3 other products which are paid😱. Also defender got a 5.5/6 rating for protection whereas the famous McAfee got 5 in their latest tests conducted in April, 2020.

But Windows defender is not a 100% effective anti-malware software. Why? Because its capabilities to defend ransomware from infecting your PC is pretty low☹. For those who don’t know, ransomware is a kind of malware that encrypts all your files and demands ransom (usually as Bitcoins) to decrypt it. These are more devastating than virus/malware since most of the ransomware extensions have no other solutions. There is one website called id-ransomware  where you can check whether a ransomware have any known decrypting tools available or not👏.

Should You Use It?
Well, it really depends on what kind of user are you. If you are one of those who download many applications online and visit sketchy sites, defender is not an option for you❌. In that case going with Bitdefender or Kaspersky would be the ideal choice. But if you are a casual users who only visits genuine websites, Windows defender is good enough for you!✔ Personally, i use the defender while browsing the internet and i'll turn it OFF when i'm gaming to not have it's effect on my gaming experience🎮. Have a wonderful week and stay safe peeps🤗.
